A compound design that offers great depth to the scene. The lower setup features Poison Sumac leaves and berries and in the foreground the detail thrasher is at rest front and center. The composition is well balanced and masterly executed. In 1981 in the book "Songs without Words" Rick shared the inspiration writing that he "Spent all day raptly watching these birds eat berries on my uncle Jerry's farm."
